Trunk Work Part 7

Man, I'm getting good at this! Just a quick update today because there wasn't much to do that you haven't already seen in another update. This entry will probably take longer to write and edit than the actual repairs required!

Basically I replaced the lower rear corner of the driver's side quarter panel, right below the taillight. I started by using my torch to melt off the remaining lead on the panel, then cut off the lower portion, removing only as much as I had to.

I used tape to mark the area to be removed.

Then I made another paper template, cut out some sheet metal and bent it into the correct shape using my makeshift sheet metal brake.

My homemade sheet metal brake.

I did some trial fitting, ground the patch to fit tight, and tacked it in place.

Patch tacked in place. Note the level which ensures that the rear of the
car is flat because there is a splash pan that bolts directly to it and is
very visible. It's important that it be flat.

Then I did the finish welds, and boy, do they look good! Nice and tight, not a lot of heat distortion, small bead, good penetration. I'm getting the hang of this MIG--finally!
