Trunk Work Part 8

Last weekend, I planned to reinstall the rear brace for the trunk and start getting the quarter panels pulled into shape again. But before I could install the brace, I wanted to sandblast and paint it because the inside will be covered by the trunk floor. So last Saturday I got my sandblaster out and had at it. Unfortunately, the piece of junk sandblaster I own (the crappy siphon-type that costs about $20) wasn't cooperating, so I bailed out on the project. That sandblaster is now in the trash, by the way. I ordered a new 50-lb. capacity pressure-type from Northern Tool and it should be here tomorrow. The brace might go in this weekend if all goes well.

Unable to do what I planned tonight, I decided to patch the rust holes in the trunk floor specifically so I could take some good photos for an upcoming article in the Buick Bugle. This particular repair was important because it will be visible from under the car. The gas tank hides most of the trunk floor on the driver's side, but this patch will be visible on the passenger's side from underneath. I chose to do all the welding from the top to make the visible area under the car look as good as possible. With some grinding, a little filler and some body schutz on the bottom of the body, nobody will ever notice it.

Two areas to patch (both marked with black marker). I started with the
one on the right.

Just like all the other patches, I simply cut it out, made a template, formed a patch and welded it in. This is about as easy as a rust repair gets and is an important skill to learn for any restoration.

Patch tacked in place.

Finished welds.

Weld bead ground down using cut-off wheel.

Dressed with sanding disc. This repair will be hidden under the trunk
mat, but it doesn't hurt to make it look nice.
